Morgenster Extra Virgin Olive Oil
The Morgenster estate nestles in the foothills of the Helderberg Mountains, in the Western Cape, South Africa. When Giulio Bertrand settled here, he quickly realised that the climate was perfect for olive growing, so he imported trees from Italy and set to work planting the groves to make his now internationally-acclaimed oil.
This oil is considered to be one of the best in the world by the well-know guide, Flos Olei, where it has consistently gained 98 points since 2012. This year it was awarded 99 (out of a possible 100).
A herbaceous aroma of spearmint and fresh pear skins is detectable in this season's Morgenster. The oil smells vibrant and fresh, and this minty flavour continues on the plate with some notes of wet salad leaves and apple peel. There is a growing black-pepper spiciness and pleasant, but not overwhelming, bitterness on swallowing.
